About Us

In recent years, the Chatham community has witnessed a growing population of aging seniors, grandparen-headed households, and unemployed and underemployed residents.

In November 2004, Chatham-Avalon Ministries Food Pantry became an approved agency in partnership with the Greater Chicago Food Depository.  We provided food baskets to our clients every Saturday morning.   In 2009, we announced a new way of doing business by structuring a Client Choice Food Pantry Model.  The model provides a cost-effective and efficient means of service delivery. Allowing clients to select the food items of their choice eliminates waste, replicates the grocery store experience and also instills a sense of control and dignity during a difficult time in their lives. No matter what the income level, people appreciate being able to select their own foods and having control over what they eat.

The Chatham-Avalon Ministries Food Pantry distributed 167,523 pounds of food to 7,070 households in 2012 between January and November.  On average, we provide food baskets to 643 households each month.
