Our Pantry Opens Every Saturday

8:00 am-10:00 am

Are you one of the thousands of people living in the Chicago area who is uncertain as to where your next meal is coming from? Do you have a loved one facing financial hardship? If so, the Chatham-Avalon Food Pantry may be able to help. Our center offers guests a variety of nutritious foods every Saturday from 8:00 a. m. until 10:00 a.m. unless otherwise posted.

Due to the high volume of people who seek assistance from our center on a regular basis, we are always in need of additional volunteers to help serve, prepare and clean-up on Saturdays during our hours of meal distribution. We need volunteers to arrive at 6:30 a.m. on Saturdays that we provide meal services. Volunteers are also needed the first Wednesday of each month between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. to help unload food and stock shelves. Volunteers should be at least 18 years of age, have the ability to lift at least 20 pounds and be able complete an application.

Giving a few hours of your time, a few kind words or a donation of your unwanted food products can go a long way when it comes to increasing the quality of life in our community. You will never know just how grateful your friends and neighbors are throughout the community. We truly appreciate your generosity just as much when you spend a day here at our center.

Social Services Counseling

In February 2013, we began providing social services to our clients. We support families and individuals by providing referrals to the correct services and office providers to apply for benefits and other forms of public aid. A benefits counselor is on site during regular distribution hours every second Saturday of each month.

Nutritional Education Program

We offer an eight-week Nutrition Workshop facilitated by the University of Illinois Extension Program. Our nutrition workshop is designed to help families with limited resources make food choices that will improve the diet and health of the family by providing hands-on learning activities, food preparation demonstrations, and pertinent discussions. The nutrition education program is planned to help families learn how to:

  • Plan and prepare nutritious meals
  • Shop wisely
  • Handle food safely
